Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, hypertension, and cancer, now account for over 41% of all deaths in Southern Africa. This silent epidemic is fueled by unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and limited access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
SADHR’s recent advocacy report emphasizes the urgency of addressing this growing public health crisis. The report highlights the following priorities:
- Developing national strategies for early diagnosis and management of NCDs.
- Increasing awareness campaigns to educate the public on prevention.
- Improving healthcare systems to ensure equitable access to treatment.
“NCDs are often overshadowed by infectious diseases, but their impact on health systems and communities is immense,” said SADHR’s spokesperson. “It’s time to prioritize NCDs as a critical component of public health.”
SADHR is collaborating with governments, CSOs, and donors to strengthen the region’s capacity to combat NCDs and promote healthier lifestyles.
