The Southern Africa Doctors for Human Rights (SADHR) expresses deep concern over a deadly outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that has killed at least 143 people to date and infected hundreds in Kwango Province. Symptoms include fever, respiratory distress, and gastrointestinal issues, with the cause yet to be identified.
We urge governments in Southern Africa, healthcare providers, and the public to adopt the following measures immediately:
- Strengthen surveillance: Rapidly report unusual illnesses to health authorities.
- Enhance hygiene: Promote frequent handwashing and disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
- Restrict movement: Monitor and control access to affected areas to prevent further spread.
- Educate communities: Dispel myths and share prevention tips widely.
- Mobilize resources: Support health systems in affected areas with equipment, testing, and personnel.
The DRC crisis underscores the need for coordinated, regional and global action to identify the pathogen and prevent a broader catastrophe. Timely intervention is critical to save lives.
